3. Course contents *

The phonetic part of the course studies the charactistics of the aural medium (speech) with respect to Dutch. The medium of speech is defined in a very general perspective and explicit reference is made to the visual medium (orthography) and the tactile medium (sign language). This is followed by a thorough discussion of the aural medium of speech. This means that the Dutch sound inventory is described from an articulatory perspective and this inventory is compared to other sound inventories of the languages of the world. In addition, there will also be a discussion of the suprasegmental aspects of Dutch, i.e. rhythm, speech rate and intonation.
The phonological part of the course discusses the underlying phonological structure of the Dutch speech sounds, both from a segmental and suprasegmental point of view (morphophonemics). Specific attention will be paid to the relationship between phonetics and phonology and the theoretical framework of optimality theory. Furthermore, the psycholinguistic aspects of phonology will be elaborated on: the role of phonology in speech and hearing, orthography and phonology, the development of phonological knowledge in children, hearing impairment and phonology (especially the acquisition of phonological knowledge in children with a cochlear implant).
