3. Course contents *

This course builds upon the BA2 course ‘Nederlandse Taalkunde 2/4: Synchrone taalstudie’: we will explore a few topics from the latter course in much more detail by means of (small) research assignments. The topics will be refreshed and elaborated in an introductory lecture and/or on the basis of readings of scientific literature, otherwise the course will consist of work seminars.

The first half of the course deals with syntactic issues, the second half with semantic issues. The choice of issues can vary (among others depending on the number of participants and their specific interests), but possible topics include:

- for the syntactic part: (i) a corpus investigation of extraposition (the occurrence of constituents after the 'clause final' verbal group) in Dutch; (ii) a corpus investigation into the use of (different variants of) the passive in Dutch; (iii) a conceptual analysis of the status of adverbs vs. adjectives as parts of speech in Dutch;

- for the semantic part: (i) an analysis of how speakers of Dutch situate states of affairs in time (in view of the international linguistic literature on this issue), e.g. on the basis of a corpus investigation into how tense forms and time adverbials interact in linguistic expressions; (ii) a corpus investigation into the semantic and grammatical characteristics of attitudinal qualificational categories in Dutch.
