3. Course contents *

  • The basic principles of electrochemical kinetics (Butler-Volmer expression), thermodynamics (Nerst equation) and transport phenomena (electrochemical double layer, ion transport) are treated.
  • The theoretical background of the most applied electrochemical techniques (linear and cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, etc.) are discussed. Each of these techniques will be further discussed using examples from up-to-date international research publications.
  • Advanced electrochemical concepts such as electrocatalysis, electrosynthesis and electrochemical reactors are theoretically introduced using supporting examples from state-of-the-art research domains. The congruence of the treated electrochemical principles in industrial processes is illustrated.
  • In the practicum sessions an electrochemical problem is elaborated in groups of two students. Two cases are treated: (1) corrosion and (2) electrosynthesis. The problem will be analysed and the necessary experiments executed. Afterwards a written report of the results and conclusions is handed in per group.
