A BA with a focus on English
The modal auxiliaries constitute a core component of the grammar of English. They present researchers of diverse orientations with intricate data, with respect to both form and function. After an introduction on the general notion of modality, the course will survey the form and the meaning of the English modals, in part on the basis of J. Coates (1983). We will then engage in detailed corpus work.
Coates, Jennifer (1983) London: Croom Helm.
Other materials will be made available as the course proceeds.
