3. Course contents *

In MA 2 the student acquires the necessary competences to function towards other doctors and in contemporary society, among others via the courses medical law, deontology and ethics. The student attains progressively a professional attitude.
 
Following topics will be discussed:

  • Medical deontology and ethics (16h)
  • Ethics of healthcare (8h)
  • Medical law (16h)

1) Medical deontology (P. Cras)
- The ‘Order of Medical Doctors’ and the ‘Deontological Medical Code’: discussion of the regulating and standardizing role of these on medical  acts
- The physicians duty to inform and the consent law of the patient as quoin for the concept ‘respect for the autonomy of the patient’ and also to be conscious that some medical interventions or diagnoses are not value free;
- The medical professional confidentiality: the necessity for the confidence of patients towards doctors and discussion of the limits; 
- The beginning life (abortion, sterilization)
- The under aged patient and the treatment of children of parents who are no more cohabiting
- How to handle non-ethical behavior of doctors and the disciplinary role of the Order of Medical Doctors
- Medical attests and the medical file 

2) Introduction to the ethics of healthcare (Paul van Bortel):
- ethical reflections and line of thought
- moral pluralism and health care
- Ethical versus clinical reasoning about a case
- casuistries on IVF, pediatric INZO, dementia, euthanasia, …
