How do children acquire their native language? This course focuses on two central questions: (i) what are the universal features of native language acquisition? And (ii) How is Dutch as a native language aquired?

A systematic chronological overview of the acquisition of Dutch as a native language is proposed: milestones in the acquistion process are discussed from the prelingual period onwards. The acquisition of various components of grammar are discussed in more detail: phonology, morpho-syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Both descriptive and explanatory aspects of native language acquisition are presented, including different viewpoints with respect to language-specificity and universality.

This course also focuses on language acquisition in atypically developing populations such as hearing impaired children.
