3. Course contents *

This course will deal with "languages in use" in specific organisational domains (profit and non-profit) that deal with multilingualism, i.e. simultaneous presence of different linguistic codes in a given speech community. We will deal with language policies ("beliefs") and language management ("practices") based on a needs analysis in a specific "domain" (Fishman 1972): companies, organisations (e.g. hospitals), communities, countries.

The students will adequately describe the current practices, and/or conduct a needs analysis (via surveys and/or interviews) and will develop and formulate advice towards the organisation.

We will address (societal) multilingualism in general, Spolsky's (2009) theories on "language management" and apply it to specific workfloor settings.
