3. Course contents *

The course is intended to introduce students to James Joyce's two main masterworks from his mature years, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake.

James Joyce's Ulysses has duly been voted the finest English-language novel published in the twentieth century. This course offers a unique opportunity to find out why, by reading the novel in its entirety, in sessions of two chapters per week.

After these nine weeks, we devote the last weeks to fragments from Finnegans Wake, notably by investigating how Joyce wrote this fascinating literary experiment.

The students also get the chance to attend (and participate in the organisation of) the 26th International James Joyce Symposium, organized by the University of Antwerp's Centre for Manuscript Genetics, 11-16 June 2018. See the conference website: http://uahost.uantwerpen.be/joyce2018/
