3. Course contents *

Aside from an in-depth introduction describing the concept of sustainability, the course will cover two main domains: : (1) the technological opportunities for material recycling and (2) instruments for (integrated) sustainability assessment.

The technological possibilities for recycling are highlighted from both current practice as well as international state-of-the-art research. Both organic and inorganic materials are discussed.  

The instruments for sustainability assessment are predominantly life cycle assessment (LCA), to estimate the environmental impact, and tchno-economic analysis, to evaluate the economic performance. Different metrics are discussed, as well as methods to integrate both sustainability aspects.

In the course also the potential effects of policy to increase recycling rates are discussed from an economic as well as technical point of view. 

The last part of the course focuses on hands-on integration of sustainability aspects within engineering and design, by e.g. mathematical optimization methods.
