3. Course contents *

In this course, we will set up a joint research project that allows us to document and analyze the English variety spoken by incoming international students at the University of Antwerp (assuming that international exchange is possible in the semester in which this course is being taught). This research project will be set against a broad theoretical background: students will be confronted with the main tenets of usage-based linguistics, variationist and interactional sociolinguistics, World Englishes, English as a Lingua Franca, and contact linguistics. Students will also get acquainted with methodological skills that are central to sociolinguistic research: conducting interviews, doing participant observation, and compiling a (small) corpus.
