3. Course contents *

The course offers a thorough introduction to human rights law, which is relevant to every student of law. The main focus will be on the European system, and its interaction with the Belgian legal order. 

In a first part, attention will be paid to concept, generations and transversal themes; normative instruments and accountability mechanisms.

In a second part, a number of specific rights is examined.

In a third part, some themes are further developed:

1. protection in Belgium and the relationship between legal orders;

2. specific rights and rights of specific groups

3. transversal themes such as positive obligations, horizontal application, conflicts of human rights, an integrated approach, jurisdiction, margin of appreciation, waiver of rights etc.
