This module introduces the student to the basic terminology and to the basic principles applied in epidemiology. We start from some historical examples of epidemiological research and show how epidemiology gradually evolved into the methodology of the study of the occurrence of health related phenomena in human (and by extent in animal) populations. The different measures of occurrence and association  are introduced.  Next, the concepts of bias and confounding are presented and discussed.
