At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences:

- Knowledge: At the end of this course the student has knowledge of: Learning outcome 1: the different types of variables.
- Learning outcome 2: the different types of distributions.
- Learning outcome 3: the basic principles of the theoretical concept normality (including the standard normal distribution).
- Learning outcome 4: the basic principles of sampling and of estimating population parameters based on samples.
- Learning outcome 5: the basic principles of formulating and testing null hypotheses.
- Implementation: At the end of this course the student can show using a dataset that s/he can: Learning outcome 6: Present data graphically correctly.
- Learning outcome 7: Summarize the different types of variable in a numerical way (measures of location and spread).
- Learning outcome 8: Apply the basic principles of the theoretical concept normality.
- Learning outcome 9: Use alternative methods to compare two groups if normality does not hold.
- Learning outcome 10: Conduct simple statistical analyses in R.

This course provides a basis knowledge statistics. The course aims to level the differences in foreknowledge between the students and provides the necessary basis for the next programme courses on statistics.

The course has an international dimension.
