3. Course contents *

Translation English > Dutch (Literary and/or audiovisual texts > Literary texts): Students are assigned individual translations of a wide variety of (excerpts of) literay texts, including prose, short stories, poetry and plays. Translations are analyzed, compared and evaluated in class. Active participation is essential.

Translation English > Dutch (Literary and/or audiovisual texts > Subtitling): Analysis and subtitling of audiovisual programmes (film and television, with and without script) of different genres with specialized software. Critical discussion of the different subtitling options on the basis of the relevant literature and guidelines.

Translation English > Dutch (Specialized texts): The course focuses on the theory and practice of translation strategies in specialized text.


Translation Dutch > English: The module Translation Dutch > English consists of seminars/tutorials in which you build on and extend acquired grammatical, lexical and pragmatic knowledge of English and of translation and translation studies. The focus in this section is on the following seven aspects of translation from Dutch into English: (1) dealing with (specialised) knowledge, (2) recognising and solving possible translation problems, (3) documenting the translation process, (4) retrieving and using translation aids, (5) drafting a target text, (6) analysing texts with a view to translation and (7) understanding the contents of the (specialised) source text of a relatively average degree of complexity.
