Through the course Philosophy in Arts and Architecture students will get acquainted with a variety of philosophical and theoretical reflections about the built environment. After a general introduction, two main issues will be dealt with:

  1. Architecture and beauty - Wat is architectural beauty? What is an 'aesthetics of architecture'? Is architecure a form of art, and if so, what is its specific character?

  2. Architecture and the good - How can architecture incarnate and espouse values and ideals? What is its role in creating a suitable - and meaningful - environment for dwelling? What is the specific role of the architect in this endeavor? And, first and foremost, which values and ideals must guide and inspire the design of the built environment?
