3. Course contents *

"Heritage and Libraries" intends to address as many aspects of heritage libraries as possible. A sound understanding of the potential of heritage collections in libraries can result in new research perspectives and lay the foundations for the future management of these libraries.

Topics addressed include:

  • caring for documentary heritage as a historical phenomenon and as a challenge to society; the history of libraries and bibliophily as factors explaining current situations;
  • collection and aacquisitions management; an overview of important heritage libraries in Belgium and the world
  • the description of heritage documents in libraries: manuscripts, printed books and prints
  • an introduction to materials and techniques
  • preservation, conservation, restoration: historical developments, current trends in digitization as a preservation technique, security matters, damage control and damage assessment
  • outreach, public service and the marketing of heritage libraries
  • legislation and regulation, possibilities for projects and cooperation
