Nationalism is one of the defining forces of modern times, but it comes in many guises. It has created and destroyed countries. It has inspired people to build free societies, but also to wage wars. It has sided with democracy, but also with tyranny. This course wants to illuminate the multi-faceted and Janus-faced phenomenon of nationalism. Examples will be mainly drawn from Belgium, the US, the Balkans and Central Europe.
Lectures are alternated with discussion seminars prepared by the students on the basis of academic articles.
