3. Course contents *

1) UK: Various cultural themes linked to British cultural nationalism, and the formation of different cultural identities within the UK (English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern-Irish). Topics include the Victorian era, the rise of modernism, the British Empire and (post-)colonialism, the Irish question, Scottish nationalism. Discussion of how these historical movements still reverberate today, and have contributed to the construction of Britain as a nation. 

2) US: The construction of an American cultural identity : analysis of some seminal texts by (among others) Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Margaret Fuller, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Dubois, Alexis de Tocqueville. Special attention will be paid to the rise of cultural nationalism in the US, and to the history/ideology of "whiteness" in American culture/politics.
