3. Course contents *

Willem Frijhoff's definition of heritage (in Dynamisch erfgoed ['Dynamic Heritage'], Nijmegen: SUN, 2007, p. 8) is used as a starting point: 'Something that is given to us from the past with the assignment to do something with it and to pass it on to the people who come after us'. Building on the more theoretical-historical approach of the course 'Cultural heritage, identity and diversity', the approach is more focused on the concrete field of action of the cultural heritage sector.

The course unit has a threefold perspective: attention to

  1. the size and diversity of the heritage-oriented field of work (with an emphasis on the situation in Flanders)
  2. the opportunities and challenges facing the cultural heritage sector today
  3. an introduction to the main management techniques used (e.g. valuation, preservation and conservation, registration, digitisation, marketing and public relations, etc.).
