3. Course contents *

The main goal of the course is to discuss the myriad ways in which Europe and the Middle East are intertwined. Most often presented as two separate worlds, we begin with the history of both regions since WWI and complicate the narrative of progress and interrogate the traditional understanding of Europe's central position in world history which often determines how these two entities are compared. We teach history in a parallel manner, focusing on wars and occupations in Europe and the Middle East since 1914 to delineate different forms of occupation in both regions. The first block of the class in November consists of a series of lectures while in the second block in January students are expected to present their research papers.
