3. Course contents *

The overall goal is to familiarize the student with the concepts and application of health economics, transmission models and model-based economic evaluation in the context of infectious diseases. 

While focusing on infectious diseases in humans throughout, the course: 
(1)  introduces pivotal topics in health economics generally (determinants of health, health production, health care market imperfections, tensions between efficiency and equity, pricing and vaccine financing issues); 
(2) teaches how disease burdens are estimated (through the concepts of Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs), Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs)) in theory and with a practical example; 
(3) explains the concepts, strengths and weaknesses of health economic evaluations (cost-effectiveness, cost-utility and cost-benefit analysis), with practical examples and exercises on computer  
(4) shows how uncertainty in data and knowledge should be accounted for and interpreted in economic evaluation, as well as in the decision making process
(5) provides an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of mathematical models used for economic evaluation 
(6) through computerized practical examples shows how to develop and use mathematical models of infectious disease transmission
