3. Course contents *

The course retraces chronologically the development of China's global relations since the onset in the 19th century, the century of 'humiliation'. Then China' s accession to the WTO is pinpointed as an important policy instrument to facilitate China's spectacular economic growth. Then China's relations with the neighboring countries (Japan, Korea, ASEAN, the issues of Taiwan and Hong Kong) are discussed, followed by relations with the US, Russia (and Central Asian states), EU and Africa. The much-discussed BRI (Belt-and-Road) initiative will also be discussed as it encompasses a global dimension. The core topic underlying this course is the rise of China and how the world reacts to this process of geopolitical reconfiguration.
