3. Course contents *

The course covers several highlights of different English and American arts. Classes will deal with poetry, theater, music, visual arts, architecture, and how these and other art forms express different national identities and a form of 'nation building' in their respective historic periods. The course is separated into two parts: an American section, and a section for the UK. 

The American section will include (among other things) the following topics:

* The music of America: jazz, blues, soul
* Architecture as a way of 'building' America
* Painting America
* Hamilton: An American Musical
* Hollywood

The UK section will include (among other things) the following topics:

* Rock 'n' Roll and the decline of the class system
* Irish music and poetry
* Romanticism in painting and poetry
* Architecture in relation to colonialism
* Shakespeare
