This advanced course focuses on an in-depth study of the social protection of employees. The aim is a further elaboration of the students’ legal-technical knowledge as well as a sharpening of their socio-critical attitude. This will mainly be done on the basis of thematic files which will not only be dealt with from a theoretical point of view but will also be practice-based through a combination of lectures and tutorials. During the academic year 2009-2010 the following topics were dealt with: the concept of wages as a basis for the regulation of contributions; social assistance (debt mediation) and social criminal law.
Depending on the topic guest lecturers may be invited. Last year the Antwerp Public Centre for Social Welfare OCMW organized a guest lecture on debt mediation.
In between the aforementioned lectures excursions will be organized. These could include a visit to an important actor in the application and/or implementation of social security law (e.g. a visit to semi-governmental institutions such as the National Office for Social Security RSZ, the National Employment Office RVA, the National Insurance Institute for Sickness and Invalidity RIZIV) and/or a visit to the Antwerp Labour Tribunal.
