3. Course contents *

This course explains why biodiversity is degrading and it provides an overview of the various scientific backgrounds for ecological management.

After an elucidation of the concept of biodiversity, the course considers various reasons for biodiversity degradation. A general picture is painted of the global environmental issue and of such specific topics as the ecological effects of habitat loss, acidification, fragmentation and eutrofication. Other aspects dealt with include island biogeography, landscape ecology, vegetation ecology, etc.

Subsequently, various methods of nature management are discussed and placed in a broader national and international context. Relevant legislation is also considered. Finally, the concept of ecosystem management is discussed at greater length.
