This course is aimed at bringing students in contact with current managerial issues in seaports. A set of lectures will provide an overview of the most important challenges faced by ports and the most appropriate strategies and management actions to address these challenges. This discussion includes the following themes: port policy in Flanders and Europe, relation between port policy and transport policy, environmental policy and town planning, infrastructural and superstructural developments in ports, port labour, port logistics, port management systems, port competition, port technology, etc.. . At the end of the course, students are asked to present a group work focusing on current issue in port management. All group presentations are discussed in class to sharpen students' capabilities in analyzing and solving contemporary management challenges in ports. The course is strongly based on class interaction.
