In democracies, the participation of citizens is the bedrock of legitimate decision-making. But how and why do citizens participate in politics? Who participates and who does not? Who should participate? In this course, we will discuss a number of different models of political participation. In addition, we will look at specific cases of citizen participation within the context of broader contemporary debates on the renewal of democracy. At the end of this course you will have a thorough understanding of the role citizen participation plays in democracies.
