3. Course contents *

This course begins by discussing the challenges and intricacies related to the food-water-energy nexus, which builds the guiding framework for this course. An overview of sustainability concepts and an explanation of the principles of Life Cycle Assessments, to evaluate this nexus are provided. Thereafter, novel water treatment/ recovery technologies (cleantech) are introduced, followed by an outline of the “cleantech” for food production at the fertilizer-feed-food value chain. Finally, solutions for achieving energy efficiency and provision of renewable energy are thought in three parts.

  1. Sustainability analysis (life cycle assessment) and the food-energy-water nexus 
  2. Cleantech for a sustainable water cycle 
  3. Cleantech for the food production chain (fertilizer – feed – food)
  4. Renewable energy and energy efficiency
    • Part I: Biogas, liquid biofuels (ethanol, biodiesel)
    • Part II: Wind, solar, hydropower, geothermal and biomass energy, thermal processes for solid biofuels (e.g. wood incineration),… 
    • Part III:  Sustainable buildings
