The objective of this course is to allow the students to situate the biological effects of global change in a broader framework. The objective of the course is to offer corner stones in finding solutions to global change. The course will learn how to go on the path of transition processes (no incremental changes) and focus on clean technologies, rather than on cleaning technologies.

The course will introduce partial solutions based on chemical, material, energy, engineering and economical aspects for mitigation to global changes. In certain situations also adaptation will be seen as part of the solution. General principles will be presented and illustrated by existing and developing technologies. Special attention will go to circular economy based on bio-based technology, the use of CO2 as new feedstock, recycling of organics and inorganics, waste to energy and chemicals etc. The course will always take into account the combination of People, Planet and Profit in one integrated system. Special attention will go to the bio-based approach to integrate biological process and technology to chemicals and materials.

The course will give a general view by presenting cases and stimulate the students to be creative on the transition pathway towards a sustainable society. The students will be stimulated to detect hurdles and pitfalls in the new developments as well.
