3. Course contents *

The core module of the course covers the conceptual and ethical foundations of popular measures of social welfare, inequality and poverty. Classical theoretical results are introduced and illustrated with recent empirical findings about the world, Europe and Belgium. The measures are then used to study the distributional implications of taxation.

The core module is accompanied by additional modules about (1) the empirical implementation of the standard measures, (2) using decomposition analysis to understand the drivers of inequality, and (3) the multidimensional extensions of standard results.
