3. Course contents *

The course consists of three parts:

- an attempt to define, or rather typify, cultural critique as an intellectual discipline, and an analysis of the qualities of what one can consider as a 'good cultural criticist'.

- discussions of texts: Susan Sontag (on photography and suffering), Roger Scruton on popular culture, Lyotard on postmodern knowledge, Jean Baudrillard on hypperreality, Rüdiger Safranski on globalization, Neil Postman on television as amusement, Furedi on the actual intellectuel, Pierre Sansot on cultural participation, and others.

- An critical analysis of concepts often used to describe our actual cultural situation (globalisation, circulation, terror, virtuality, knowlegde, evaluation, performance, network, creativity, flexibility)
