3. Course contents *

This module gives you the opportunity to deepen your statistical knowledge and to synthesise statistical insights. We will begin with a critical look at state of the art statistical analyses from leading scientific publications in Political Science. In the following, we will discuss the problems connected with terms such as statistical significance, power, confirmatory modelling, interaction effects, mediation, and moderation. We will illustrate these topics by looking at actual data sets from political science research. Last but not least, you will learn about and apply the Structural Equations methodology (Mplus).

1. Statistical significance and power

                “Don’t say: It’s significant with three stars…”

2. Measurement models: Confirmatory factor analysis

“Exploration is for dodo’s, confirmation is the future”

3. Testing interaction, moderation and mediation in structural equation models

“Learning to spreak ‘statistical’: X, Y, XZ and X-Z-Y”
