3. Course contents *

In this course, students have to cope with research articles as academic scholars in economic and social sciences do. A first (limited) section provides them with the necessary tools to do this. On the one hand, the (aim of the) elements of a research paper, review report and research proposal are discussed. On the other hand, some state-of-the-art research methods are presented in an insightful way. In doing so, the emphasis is on experimental research, since this type of research takes an important place within actual economic and social sciences. This first part is partly addressed through the in-depth presentation of two or three research papers by the lecturer-in-arch.

In a second (extensive) section students are, step by step, trained in (i) the synthesis and discussion of a research presentation (based on a minimum number of presentations by fellow students), (ii) the in-depth presentation of state-of-the art research, (iii) writing a review report, and (iv) writing a research proposal. “Learning by example” and “learning by doing” take a central place in this course. For each component, the lecturer provides the students with a clear outline of the assignment, a clear communication of the evaluation parameters, mandatory and/or optional interim submission of assignments for extensive feedback and an individually communicated extensive final feedback.
