The central objective of this course is to use the basic principles underlying organizational theory as a means to understanding both organisational stability and development, as well as the tension between both forces. The handbook "Organisatiestructuren" by Henry Mintzberg will serve as the main course material to illustrate the five fundamental organisational structures. This analysis will help us to answer the complex question: "Why are effective organisations structured the way they are?"
In addition to Mintzberg, this course also touches upon more recent trends and evolutions in the organisational landscape, such as flat organisations and networked organisations. Attention will also be devoted to more interpersonal aspects of intra-organisational functioning, and alternative structures which build upon implicit and dynamic relationships. These topics will be covered using recent academic literature.
