3. Course contents *

The lecture offers the students a background needed for the management and deployment of “The Internet of Things”. It introduces the different aspects of network management such as configuration, performance and security management. Those aspects will be applied on a Wireless Sensor Network example.

Configuration management

  • Role of IPV6 and 6LowPAN
  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

Security

  • Introduction to Cryptography
  • Application of cryptographic principles in networks
  • Firewalls, digital signature, certificate, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)

Performance- analysis of networks by means of simulation

  • Modeling
  • Model implementation
  • Model exploitation
  • Model verification
  • Introduction To Wireless Sensor Networks

Physical layer

  • Medium Access Control (MAC) and Radio Duty Cycling (RDC)
  • Routing Layer (Routing for Low Power and Lossy Networks, RPL)
  • Application Layer (Constrained Application Protocol COAP)

Practical Exercises:
In the practical exercise sessions students solve problems under supervision. The selected problems are a direct application of knowledge and concepts gained in the lectures.

During the lab sessions students will set up a Wireless Sensor Network and evaluate the performance of the system or of certain subsystems.
