3. Course contents *

This course offers an introduction to a number of topics in development studies. The topics may vary from year to year. They usually include the following:

  • A very brief introduction to "Development" & "Development studies"
  • Two crucial episodes in economic history: the industrial revolution and colonization
  • The population bomb
  • Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Civil war
  • Natural resources, conflict and development
  • The tragedy of the commons
  • Introduction to aid
  • The aid effectiveness debate
  • Humanitarian aid and development
  • International capital flows
  • International institutions

Each of these topics will include a mixture of stylized facts on the topic (e.g. aid & trade flows, good governance, nonrenewable natural resources, …), current debates (e.g. Giving aid: Yes or No? How? How much?, Heading for a climate disaster?) and case studies (e.g. failed states in the African Great Lakes Region, the management of natural resources, …).

The course will start with a general introduction by the coordinator (M. Verpoorten). The different topics will be covered by the coordinator as well as several other lecturers (including Danny Cassimon, Nadia Molenaers, Kritsof Titeca, Nik Stoop and Sara Geenen).
