Qualitative Research in Health Care | Summer School | Antwerp Summer University

Summer School | 19 - 23 August 2024

The Summer School Edition 2024 will take place from August 19 to August 23 in Antwerp.

This basic course teaches the participants in 5 days how to start from a research question, conducting a qualitative research and progress to writing a scientific paper in qualitative research.

Guest speaker: Dr. Sara Coemans is the coordinator for qualitative research at FLAMES KULeuven (an inter-university training network rooted in the five Flemish universities) and lecturer in the Child and Youth studies program at University College Leuven-Limburg. She holds a doctoral degree in Educational Sciences and a master in Social Pedagogy from the University of Leuven. Her methodological interests lie mainly in the following research areas: arts-based research, participatory methods, quality appraisal and scoping reviews.

She will bring a workshop on photovoice and visual methods. Photovoice is one of the most widespread methodologies of the use of photographs in research studies. Building on the principles of participatory research, participants are provided with cameras and are in charge of the ‘photo’ and ‘voice’ aspect of the research. More and more qualitative researchers are discovering the unique opportunities of this methodology. It enables participants (patients, clients, children, youngsters, local residents, employees) to express themselves and record and reflect daily experiences and issues of concern. It can also be used for various goals (including monitoring/evaluation, needs assessment, research and advocacy). This workshop is designed for those new to photovoice and visual methods and provides a detailed introduction into the key aspects of this approach.
