Vector graphics workshop

On the 4th of March the Antwerp Young Minds will be organizing a workshop about vector graphics. Using some freely available software we will show you how you can make professional looking figures suitable for academic publishing and beyond (see for example the attached poster).

The workshop consists of two parts:

  1. TikZ & PGFPLOTS: TikZ can be considered as the LaTeX of vector graphics. You write TikZ code to define points, lines, shapes, etc. and after compilation you get a vectorised PDF in the natural beauty of LaTeX. The benefit of TikZ is that you can work very precisely by using exact coordinates. You can also automate parts to efficiently make complex figures and/or animations. The downside of all these capacities is the steep learning curve, similar to LaTeX. PGFPLOTS is an extension specialized in producing plots which gives you high control over your plot design.
  2. Inkscape: this is a WYSIWYG program that allows you to create vector graphics or vectorize other pixel graphics. The benefit of Inkscape is that you'll be up in no time and the possibilities are many. There are quite some useful tools, effects and plugins (among which LaTeX support) that can make work easier. The downside is that it can become cumbersome when you need precision. It's best to bring your own laptop so that you can work with the demos . For the first part some basic knowledge of LaTeX is expected. You can already install LaTeX and TikZ or work through Overleaf. Inkscape is freely available from the their site. To have an idea of the number of participants we ask you to register.
