BUGS@School brings science into primary school classrooms in 2026. Through interactive workshops, children discover the hidden world of microbes in urban parks and learn how scientific research works - not just by listening, but by doing.
Together with our team and teachers, schoolchildren help shape the project. They actively help design the study by discussing what they usually do in the park and choosing a few activities to explore. They also take part in microbe sample collection before and after spending time in the park. In this way, they experience how scientists ask questions, collect data, and look for patterns. These steps will help the BUGS research team explore how activities in parks may influence the microbes children come into contact with. By involving children directly, we gain valuable insights while keeping the focus on learning and curiosity.
Beyond the science, BUGS@School aims to inspire and empower. Children meet researchers, ask their own questions, and see that science is something they can actively participate in. The project strengthens the connection between schools and universities and shows that discovery does not only happen in a lab - it can start in your local classroom or park.
We are very grateful to the participating teachers and schoolchildren for their enthusiasm and collaboration, which make this hands-on experience possible.
