Bio

Excy Hansda is a PhD student at the University of Liverpool, UK and a visiting research student at the University of Antwerp. He obtained an MSc in Architectural Conservation at the University of Edinburgh in 2021 and a Bachelor of Architecture at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 2019. His PhD research complicates the idea of the suburbanization of Bombay; it looks at the suburbs as a space of colonial power and Indian resistance, as a space of marginalization of the middle-class but also of subversion and emerging middle-class identities. A licensed architect in India, he is interested in the histories of South Asia and developing new radical perspectives to explore the reflections of colonialism, modernism, and identity in the built environment.Image: attached
Favourite (interior) architecture project

The restoration of the Director's office of the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India, by Aishwarya Tipnis Architects is a fascinating project. The 150+ year old building has been modified over the years to meet the growing needs of a contemporary academic facility. The restoration project ensured that the administrative requirements of the building were incorporated and prioritised, along with future interior works.Image: attached
