The Laboratory of Physiopharmacology has all the technology to conduct competitive research in the field of atherosclerosis and heart failure:

Vascular surgery
The laboratory has a fully equipped surgical station with Olympus SZ40 dissecting microscopes, Hugo-Sachs model 845 ventilators, Sevoflurane gas anesthetics with Kent Scientific ventilator, pulse Ox (Datex SpO2),  P-calibrator, ECG-meter, fully equipped data-acquisition sytem (ADInstruments), oxygen supplies, heating pads, cautery,  micro and large syringe infusion pumps, rodent operating table, and a complete set of surgical instruments.
Vascular  reactivity
Vascular reactivity can be measured with several organ bath setups, including force transducers and a fully equiped data acquisition setup (ADInstruments) for large vessels. A myograph (Multi Myograph model 610M) is available for small vessels. Furthermore, the laboratory has a flow/pressure perfusion system for small  vessels to determine vessel diameter.
Possibility to use voltage clamp and patchclamp (Heka). Calcium can be measured with fluorimetry and fluorescence microscopy.
In vitro cardiovascular haemodynamics
Papillary heart muscle mechanics with isometric – isotonic force/length transducer  (designed in-house)
In vivo cardiovascular haemodynamics

  • Intra-cardiac pressure-volume loop equipment (Millar)
  • Transonic flow meter
  • Non-invasive blood pressure measurements (LE5001 Panlab) and threadmill facility (Panlab)
  • Bloodgas analysis ABL77 Radiometer

Possibility to implant stents in arteries of rabbits using a Mobile X-ray FlexiView 8800 C-arm (GE Medical Systems).
The laboratory has a Toshiba Aplio XG 14MHz ultrasound imaging unit equipped for full cardiovascular  imaging in both mice and rats. Furthermore, equipment for biological monitoring (ECG, respiration, temperature) and sevoflurane anesthesia is available. 
Molecular biology
The laboratory is fully equipped for standard molecular biology techniques such as polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and western blotting,  ELISA ,spectrophotometry of RNA and DNA samples (Nanodrop ND-1000), conventional and real time PCR (7300 PCR system, Applied Biosystems) and agarose gel electrophoresis.  UV-fluorescence of agarose gels and chemiluminescence of western blots can be analyzed using a Lumi-Imager (Roche).
Histology and immunohistochemistry
Fully equipped lab with a Leica 2145 (paraffin sections) and Leica RM2165 (plastic sections) microtome, a Microm HM500 cryostat (frozen sections), paraffin embedding system (Medite, type TBS88) and Leica TP1020 rotary automatic tissue processor.
Cell culture
Fully equipped lab with four biohazard laminar flow cabinets (Clean Air and Steril-Antares) and two CO2 incubators.
Specimens can be imaged by either transmitted light or epi-fluorescence using an Olympus BX40 microscope, equipped with a fully automated imaging system for multiple slides, or an Olympus BX40 microscope for fluorescence and CCD imaging system (PCO Sensicam). 
Water purification
Tap water is purified with a Millipore Elix 20 and Simplicity185 system.
Scintillation counting
Radioactive samples can be measured with a Tri-Carb 2300TR liquid scintillation counter (Packard).
Ultracentrifugation can be performed with a Centrikon T-1080 ultracentrifuge (Kontron Instruments)
