The ITDR Masterclass aims to train researchers and research support staff to become an expert in inter- and transdisciplinarity. The format is a 5-day intensive and interactive course, based on theoretical insights in the process of creating ITD research and how to apply these insights in practice.

In this course, we will focus on these four goals:

  • Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the key steps involved in the Interdisciplinary Research (IDR) process.
  • Through practical examples, they’ll explore how these insights can be translated into practice.
  • Participants will collaborate on a shared case to test and refine the concepts learned and apply these insights to their own ITDR research idea or case.
  • Participants will explore research design with arts-based research methods.
  • Participants will not only learn in theory and practice on how to set up an interdisciplinary (or transdisciplinary = including stakeholders) project, the course should also result in an optimal inter- or transdisciplinary project proposal. At the end of the course, participants will present their IDR case.

This ITDR Masterclass will also provide a step-up to become an ITDR Facilitator, for those researchers interested in this profile.

Target group

This summer school is intended for and open to:

  • predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers aiming to submit an FWO Fellowship at the FWO Interdisciplinary Panel for the upcoming call (for UAntwerp participants) or how to approach individual interdisciplinary fellowship applications (for all participants)
  • researchersresearch teams and/or research support staff aiming to learn how to prepare and/or support an interdisciplinary project, preferably to be submitted in the upcoming 12 months
  • researchers actively working on interdisciplinary projects or with ITDR teams and interested in understanding the dynamics of ITDR projects better
  • YUFE researchers (including BioYUFE) and/or research teams aiming to set up interdisciplinary collaborations
Prerequisites

Participants should have a basic understanding of their own scientific discipline and its research methods and should provide an inter- and/or transdisciplinary research case they want to work on.

Maximum number of participants: 25

Campus

This summer school takes place at Stadscampus (Prinsstraat 13, 2000 Antwerp) of the University of Antwerp. This campus is located in the city centre.

Micro-credential and study credits (ECTS)

Successful completion of the summer school can be awarded with 3 credits according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Credits will be awarded by the University of Antwerp based on attending the preparatory track, 100% (active) participation during the course and group work and delivery of a qualitative presentation at the end of the course.

To include the credits in the curriculum at the home institution, participants need an agreement with the responsible person at their university. University of Antwerp students eligible to include the ECTS credits as part of their study programme must register via Mobility Online and SisA.

All certificates of completion are issued as a micro-credential. Participants who attend the scheduled course contact hours, but don't complete the tasks will receive a certificate of attendance.

Learning outcomes

  • Researchers gain knowledge and a process framework to initiate interdisciplinaryresearch and enhance its design and implementation
  • Researchers acquire knowledge of inter- and transdisciplinary researchmethodologies and interdisciplinary thinking
  • Researchers gain insights into and expand their knowledge of other disciplines andcollaboration with these disciplines by engaging with colleagues from differentfields and experts in interdisciplinary research
  • Researchers develop broader soft skills, such as presenting and facilitating meetingswhere diverse people and perspectives must align.
