Gender neutral toilets

Just wash your hands

Separate toilets for men and women can be found just about everywhere in public spaces, including at our university. Makes sense, right? If you are cisgender (i.e. when your gender identity coincides with the sex you were assigned at birth), chances are you haven't thought about this before. However, for transgender or non-binary people, this often makes the choice of toilet less obvious or safe. Which toilet should you go to if you do not feel male and/or female? Even transgender persons who are in transition, for example, sometimes get dismissive looks when visiting a toilet. With gender-inclusive toilets, there is no segregation based on gender and everyone can safely use the same toilet. Until this is a reality, it is important not to look at each other on toilet choice. Our faculty likes to make it clear: the toilets are for everyone.
