Abstract
Confronting Zionism: Decolonizing Palestine and Building the World Anew
This master class is based on Professor Noura Erakat’s forthcoming book, co-authored with Professor John Reynolds, that sets out to give readers the conceptual tools to think through the relationship between the practices of Israeli settler colonialism, apartheid, and genocide on the one hand, and the ideology and institutions of Zionism on the other. Drawing on anti-colonial intellectual traditions and Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), the book shows that in a settler colonial context, there are genocidal tendencies present which are escalated at key moments of state formation, territorial expansion, and counter-insurgency. In these moments, the apartheid regime of domination gives way to the genocidal intent to destroy. Against this, the book seeks to offer the reader ways to think about political, material and ideological decolonization in Palestine, as well as about the imperative of such anti-imperial decolonization for the wider world in the face of rising global capitalist authoritarianism.
