Een project voor overstromingen in Bangladesh
Oké. Ja, zoals u misschien weet, 40 jaar terug heb ik, samen met de toenmalige rector van de UFSIA, Louis van Bladel, besloten van, en hebben we de middelen gevonden, om USOS op te richten. Nu, dit was eigenlijk oorspronkelijk een initiatief vanuit de studenten, zoals je nu ook rond Gaza en rond dekoloniaal denken een studentenbeweging hebt. Toen ging het over de overstromingen in Bangladesh, die in 1974 hadden plaatsgevonden. En dus, mensen zaten massaal zonder woningen enzovoort, en op dat ogenblik wilden de studenten iets concreets doen. En dus, hebben ze een solidariteitsactie opgericht, om opnieuw gebouwen, huizen, op te trekken.
De studenten wilden verder gaan. Ze wilden ook de universiteit betrekken en zorgen dat de universiteit zich engageerde voor de grote thema's van die tijd, en het grote thema van die tijd was onrechtvaardigheid op wereldschaal, rijk en arm, die vooral internationaal heel sterk was. In die context werd USOS opgericht.

A project for floods in Bangladesh
Okay. Yes, as you may know, 40 years ago, together with the then rector of the UFSIA, Louis van Bladel, I decided to set up USOS and we found the resources to do so. Now, this was actually originally a student initiative, just as you now have a student movement around Gaza and around decolonial thinking. At the time, it was about the floods in Bangladesh that had taken place in 1974. So, people were left homeless en masse, and at that moment, the students wanted to do something concrete. And so, they set up a solidarity campaign to rebuild buildings and houses.
The students wanted to go further. They also wanted to involve the university and ensure that it committed itself to the major issues of the time, and the major issue of the time was injustice on a global scale, rich and poor, which was particularly strong internationally. It was in this context that USOS was founded.
