Advanced Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage

The course deepens the knowledge about intangible cultural heritage and its safeguarding. On the one hand, we explore the meaning of intangible heritage in an urban super-diverse context - in close collaboration with heritage communities and local heritage specialists. On the other hand, we intensively engage with the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage and related international politics and mechanisms.

The course is designed for MA students in Critical Heritage Studies at the University of Antwerp.

Intangible Cultural Heritage - Introduction

This course provides an introduction to intangible heritage. We examine how the concept can be understood theoretically and approached from an ethnological perspective. The focus is on processes of 'heritage making', whereby everyday culture is declared cultural heritage, and the actors, factors and negotiations involved in this. In addition to the theoretical part, various areas of interest, such as intangible heritage and museums, tourism, sustainability and the senses, are discussed in detail. The course includes discussions with both intangible heritage brokers and intangible heritage communities, as well as practical fieldwork exercises.

The course is designed for MA students in Critical Heritage Studies at the University of Antwerp.
