The current version of the gazetteer is available here, on Druid, a LOD platform. You can query it using SPARQL language via de SPARQL rubric on the left of the screen. Some basic queries are ready to use and available on the first page of the dataset. A short demo is available here.

You can also find a lighter version of the dataset on the World Historical Gazetteer, a website that offers reconciliations services (directly on the website or via its API reachable with OpenRefine) in order to help you identifying place names coming from your historical documents. More information about reconciliation actions is available here.
