In the project, we trace the value chain of sand and stones, manually extracted along Lake Kivu, transported to the city of Bukavu, and materially transformed into the city’s handmade architecture. Focusing on human labour, nature and material constructions, we envisage a threefold change: better protection of the environment around extraction, transport and construction sites, better protection of human labour (and particularly female labour) along the sand and stone value chain, and improved constructions and urbanisation of the city of Bukavu and future extensions. This project will co-construct knowledge in the fields of labour, environment and architecture, and train two PhD students (one in Environment and one in Development Studies) and two MSc students (one in Architecture and one in Human Settlements). In doing so, the project will contribute to strengthening multidisciplinary research and inter-faculty collaboration, through the consolidation of the existing research centre Centre d’Expertise en Gestion Minière (CEGEMI) and the creation of a new Academic Design Office (ADO) for a sustainable, inclusive and enriching urban future. The project responds to pressing needs in the city of Bukavu. It will have a solid societal impact through the continuous involvement of key stakeholders. A stakeholder platform, annual stakeholder meetings and creative outreach provide the conditions for uptake, while CEGEMI and ADO can consolidate these collaborations in a sustainable way.

Dans ce projet, nous retraçons la chaîne de valeur du sable et des pierres, extraits manuellement le long du lac Kivu, transportés jusqu'à la ville de Bukavu et matériellement transformés en architecture "artisanale" dans la ville. En nous concentrant sur le travail humain, la nature et les constructions matérielles, nous envisageons un triple changement : une meilleure protection de l'environnement autour des sites d'extraction, de transport et de construction, une meilleure protection du travail humain (et en particulier du travail féminin) tout au long de la chaîne de valeur du sable et des pierres, et une amélioration des constructions et de l'urbanisation de la ville de Bukavu et de ses futures extensions. Ce projet co-construira des connaissances dans les domaines du travail, de l'environnement et de l'architecture, et formera deux étudiants en doctorat (un en environnement et un en études du développement) et deux étudiants en maîtrise (un en architecture et un en "human settlements"). Ce faisant, le projet contribuera à renforcer la recherche multidisciplinaire et la collaboration inter-facultés, grâce à la consolidation du Centre d'Expertise en Gestion Minière (CEGEMI) et à la création d'un nouveau Bureau Académique de Conception (Academic Design Office, ADO) pour un avenir urbain durable, inclusif et enrichissant. Le projet répond à des besoins pressants dans la ville de Bukavu. Il aura un impact sociétal solide grâce à l'implication continue des principales parties prenantes. Une plateforme de parties prenantes, des réunions annuelles de parties prenantes et une sensibilisation créative fournissent les conditions nécessaires à l'adoption du projet, tandis que CEGEMI et ADO peuvent consolider ces collaborations de manière durable.
