Hi! I’m Yoni, second year PhD student in the GaP research group. My topic is discourses and interactions on child birth in Antwerp, a linguistic-ethnography. Before I started this PhD, I studied Linguistics and Literature (Dutch and English) at Ghent University. After that, I did some “regular” jobs for a couple of years. I did customer support jobs and I worked in a library of a Hogeschool. But academia and research called me again and here I am!

Hi! I am Marie, a second-year PhD student starting this October. My supervisors are Luna De Bruyne (University of Antwerp), Orphée De Clercq (Ghent University) and Mariet Raedts (University of Antwerp). I work on the same project as Jerry, focusing on the computational side: I analyse our multilingual corpus of hotel reviews and responses using automated methods. I am also working on my Linguistics at Flemish Universities Bingo card, having already studied at Ghent University (Bachelor’s and Master’s in French-Latin), KU Leuven (Master’s in General Linguistics) and the University of Antwerp (PhD in Linguistics). This year, I am joining the Linguini team as research support coordinator. I will be helping to organise research-related activities for our PhD community, including writing groups and our networking event for PhD students, Linguistics Link-Up. You can usually find me in the L-building, where I share an office with Hannah on the third floor. We also happen to be the proud organisers of the office Yoga Club. Hello! My name is Jerry Rampello, and I am currently at the end of my first year as a PhD student at the University of Antwerp. For my research project, I am interested in how culture shapes online customer service communication. Using a cross-cultural pragmatics approach, I study webcare interactions between hotels and guests across eight languages and cultural contexts. My research investigates how communication practices differ across cultures and how these publicly visible interactions affect the perceptions of bystanders who encounter them online.

I am affiliated with the Grammar and Pragmatics research group where Griet Boone is my main supervisor. Next to her, I have three co-supervisors who help me navigate all the languages of the corpus I am working on. They are Lieve Vangehuchten (UA), Dieter Vermandere (UA) and Rebecca Van Herck (Radboud University).

In Linguini, I cover the role of Social Activities Coordinator, that means I take care of organising all kinds of social activities to make our shared journey a bit more enjoyable.

My hobbies include watching old movies, comedy shows, documentaries, and reading classics. I also enjoy listening to classical and electronic music, hiking in nature, good coffee, and vintage cameras. My favorite shape of pasta is the anelletti siciliani.

Ave, my name is Alexander, one of the members of Linguini! Currently, I am in the third year of my PhD on Dutch syntactic alternations, under the supervision of Dirk Pijpops. Before that, I studied Linguistics and Literature (Dutch-Latin) at the KU Leuven. In my spare time, I play football and piano, watch a lot of movies and love travelling (and my guilty pleasure is Clouseau)! Within Linguini, I am the spokesperson for all BAP/AAP personnel, ensuring that you feel represented. I will reach out to the relevant councils (faculty, departmental, research groups, etc.) to gather information, ask questions, raise concerns, and propose ideas on your behalf. Hello! My name is Hannah and I am in my second year of my PhD at the CLiPS research group. I work on cross-lingual emotion verbalization and detection, and I am supervised by Luna De Bruyne. Before starting my PhD I completed a BA and MA in Linguistics at the University of Toronto in Canada. I am the newsletter coordinator for Linguini and throughout the year I will be sending out a regular newsletter to keep you all updated on news, events and any other information that is important for you to know. Hi! My name is Victor De Marez. I'm in the third year of my PhD at the CLiPS research group, supervised by Walter Daelemans and Luna De Bruyne. My research focuses on interpreting the conversational state in large language models. Before starting my PhD, I earned a bachelor's degree in informatics and a master's degree in computer science from the Catholic University of Leuven.
