The Marian character of the City of Antwerp

Disclosing facade sculptures via mobile digital media

The VZW Kruis en Beeld aims to inventory, conserve, restore and disclose the massive collection of Marian (and other saints) statues, which are so typical for the city of Antwerp. Our restoration and conservation department has been restoring these statues over many years. Once restorated, he statues are replaced. For the disclosure of the socio-cultural meaning of these sculptures  a web “app” has been developed. The launch of the web app was accompanied by a socio-cultural event, bringing a historical, traditional ritual back to life in a contemporary way.

Research questions.

How can we re-imbed the restorated sculptures within their local socio-cultural environment?
How can we raise the awareness of the general public for the presence and the historical and social importance of (endangered) heritage ?

Impact.

Disclosure through the website from VZW Kruis en Beeld. Throughout the research and treatment process of some 20 statues (in natural stone and terracotta), specific and detailed know-how has been gained.

Not only concerning the individual sculptors and their choice of materials but also regarding 18th/19th century restorations, façade treatments, statue replacements, finishing layers, annual maintenance rituals, etc.

Residents who live near to these statues are more aware of their presence and consider them more as ‘their’ (own) statues.
